Memory Six: Lovers

KAYLEY SAT ON the dirt of the forest floor, her torso leaning forward, her arms wrapped around her legs. The upper-half of her body was naked, and the delicate fingers of Th glided down her back.

"You've had worse," he said. "There's no bone this time. He really didn't put much thought into it."

She shivered, and stared at the fire blazing in the middle of their campsite. The sound of cups clinking on china plates contrasted with the snorting and snuffling of the native creatures. The noises seemed out of place in the forest, like Michael had. "Will I need to see a healer?" she asked. "A mage?"

Kayley felt a nail run across some of her bumps and scars that had formed a long time ago, some created by Th himself in the darkness of an alley that'd had sprightly roaches and graffiti on its walls.

"No," he said. She heard him rip light fabric, and felt cold arms slide around her. "If I seal them, you'll be fine."

"I hear a condition in there." Kayley sensed his fingers run across two of the wounds, the action making her involuntarily shiver.

She listened to a kettle as it started to gurgle and bubble. It let out a short whistle—soft, not strong.

"My brother and I might be willing to overlook your...aggression for certain assurances," D started. Kayley turned and saw the female god near the fire. She held a cigarette just above the flames, until its end lit up and green smoke floated upwards, towards the swaying silhouettes above them. "You're not searching for a dead one this time, correct?" the deity continued.

"Yes," Kayley responded.

"And you're working, in a way, for the store clerk."

"Yes."

"To save his cousin?"

"Yes." The bandages were pulled tight, making her breathe in sharply.

"He has a ring of mine," D said. "I'd like him to return it to me." The kettle whistled, D placed the cigarette in her mouth and poured the tea. Kayley noticed its steam didn't go straight up; it hovered around the cups' lips and then flowed down towards the saucers. It rolled up and down. Up and down.

"I'd rather have three names in my ledger," Kayley said, taking the drink offered. "The living and I aren't fond of each other."

Warm, soft cloth could be felt on her shoulders, and chilly lips kissed the peak of her head. "It's not like that," Th said as he sat down by the fire. "They were engaged."

She spat out her tea. "Whatthefuck?"

D coughed and took another drag of her cigarette. Th continued, "I don't think engagement is the best word. Like when I call you my girlfriend, I don't mean that." His crimson eyes danced. "I like you, I do. It's fun when we talk and play chess or shogo, but I'm not settling down material."

"You're also a god of death."

"And…I sleep around. A lot." He paused, bouncing his fingertips on each other, and fluffed his hair. "I guess what we're trying to say is that they were moving it to the next level.
